In California we are in the middle of a serious drought. Every day the local, regional and state news seems to have an update about how Californians need to further reduce water consumption. We've stopped watering our lawns, washing our cars, running the water while brushing our teeth and now we are at the point where there are PSAs on the radio encouraging folks to shower no longer than one song on the radio. The time is right for the Neutrogena Naturals "WipeforWater Challenge!
I've been using the Neutrogena Naturals wipes for about 2-3 weeks now. These handy wipes are supposed to easily remove make-up. Admittedly, outside of the occasional application of mascara, I don't have time for make-up. The wipes did an OK job of removing the mascara, but I was wearing waterproof mascara and that is a little tough to remove regardless of what you use. The wipes did an excellent job of cleaning my face leaving it feeling fresh and without any residue. The wipes have a pleasant scent that isn't overpowering. With a baby due next month, I'll be sure to include a package of Neutrogena Naturals in my hospital bag to freshen up between huffing and puffing. :-)

will give you an opportunity to experience water temperature and visibility.
Take some time to view what the course looks like from water level and pre-plan

terrain and variability of the winds without taking too much time. Note that while much of the course is flat,

success in any race at any distance. However, the nature of the flattish Ironman
Arizona bike course and potential for favorable winds early in your bike ride
can be a recipe for going too hard, too fast. Stick with the plan generated by
your training preparations. Whether you are riding according to heart rate,
power or a combination of various metrics, stick to your plan. Keep your ego in
check and let the early ‘fasties’ get their speed on during loop one. Race your
race. While you’ll want to capitalize on
tailwinds, riding steady and sticking to your

aero-equipment and put in the time training your body to ride in the aero
position. To maximize your performance
and cheat the wind to the ultimate you’ll want to stay in the aero position as
much as possible. However, taking the opportunity to briefly stretch out your
back and body on some inclines can help ensure you’ll keep cranking like a locomotive
and be ready to fly on the run, too.

Halloween can be a downright frightful time for the endurance athlete’s diet.
Whether you are aiming to maintain your hard-earned race weight or working diligently
to avoid off-season weight gain, Halloween and its ghoulish treats can truly
sneak up on your waist line. If you scour the internet you’ll find no shortage
of ‘eat this, not that’ or ‘which candy is better to eat’ stories. When the
candy shows up at your office, screams at you from store shelves or finds its
way into your child’s trick or treat bag, you probably aren’t going to spend
time analyzing which snack size candy bar is more nutritious. Reality check.
Candy isn’t nutritious. It is a treat!
Save some time counting protein and fat grams and navigate the Halloween
holiday with these six sensible strategies.

home on Halloween night consider offering non-candy alternatives. Hand out
Halloween themed school supplies like mini-paper pads, pencils, erasers, rulers

something useful and unique. Plus this
strategy will help keep left over candy from somehow finding its way into your
tummy and spoiling your power-to-weight ratio.
Everyone knows that it is easy to bust open the candy packages before the first
‘trick or treat’ on October 31st. Why tempt yourself? If you love
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Mr. Good Bars don’t buy a 5lb bag of those tasty
temptations. Actually don’t buy them at all. Opt for a candy that you think is
fun or nostalgic (think Tootsie Rolls or Smarties), but choices that won’t have
you sneaking around like a ninja to snag a sugary fix.
Have a treat not the whole bag. Everything in
moderation, so the saying goes. Enjoy a few of your favorite sweets. Savor
them, soak up their non-nutritional wondrous-ness and call it a day. It is no
secret that deprivation can cause intense desire and an absolute loss of
will-power. Plan ahead, allow yourself a couple of treats and don’t look back.
(You don’t want to see what’s chasing you anyway).
sizes have shrunk. Gone are the days of full-size candy bars or even half-sized
versions. Today we have ‘bite-sized’ and ‘snack-sized’, perfect for enjoying a
taste (not a ton) of yummies. You can probably satisfy your own inner sugar
devil with a small sampling of a few candies; those bon bons that you cannot
resist. Be mindful of what you eat. More than a few can quickly equal a pile of
empty wrappers. Step away from the candy bowl!
festive holiday bowl will tempt and taunt you. Avoid devouring candy before the
first goblin shows up at your doorstep by keeping it concealed in the deep, dark
recesses of your cabinets. Hide it behind yours canisters of recovery drink,
protein bars and gummy this and thats. Bring out your treats when the doorbell
rings. Cross your fingers for many ghosts and goblins to take the candy off
your hands.
As we move closer to the end of the 2014 triathlon racing season, it is really
easy to get caught up in the race entry frenzy for 2015. Pushed by the pressure to enter before races

race entry budget before can realize you don’t even have one! The lure of
Ironman branded races or televised events like the Escape from Alcatraz
triathlon is undeniable and for good reason, these events are fun and exciting.
However, be sure to figure in and support your local multisport events, you’ll
be glad you did.

can before race day by choosing some events close to home. You’ll get more

Traveling light is paramount to a stress free experience as is keeping important items close by and away from the sticky hands of would-be thiefs. This jacket is your personal secret agent costume featuring a RFID blocking pocket to protect your sensitive possessions (ie credit cards & passport) from skimmers.

The Sterling Jacket for women, made by SCOTTeVest is available is six colors including black, beige, fog, navy, red and boysenberry. I choose the navy, since I wear so much blue, but I'm still thinking boysenberry would have been a great choice, too. Of course, might as well add black, beige and fog, too! The Sterling is machine washable so if you find yourself covered with trail dust, mud or peanut butter and jelly fingerprints from your kid, no worries.

I really love the cut of the Sterling jacket. It is tailored to the feminine shape without being tight. The jacket converts to a vest with a few quick unzips to remove the arms. I ordered a size medium and it fits nicely though at 5'10, I wonder if a size large would have been even better. I suppose it depends on how much I pack into each of the 23 pockets. Yes, 23! The Sterling features artfully placed pockets with zippers and velcro to carry everything from your gadgets, writing implements, ID/cards, a water bottle and just about anything you can dream up. That brings me to the video below. As mother to an animal loving toddler, sometimes pockets are needed to carry a few 'extra' friends.

I used to ride my bike for work. As a professional triathlete, riding a bike is pretty important to the job equation. I always felt a little silly when "Bike to Work Week" would roll around. If the bike is my work, how do I ride to it? How do I measure the miles of "Bike to Work Week"? Where do the work miles start? Where do they end? When I have I arrived at work?

Fast forward to today. I am now a retired professional triathlete. I still ride regularly, just not as far. Heck, I even participate in races now and again. However, "Bike to Work Week" rolls around and I still feel kind of goofy. I co-own Hypercat Racing with my husband, a legitimate brick and mortar place of business (and work), but I work from home 6 of 7 days a week so I can be with my toddler.

Darn it. How can I do "Bike to Work Week"?

This year, I decided it didn't matter where work was, or that I was working most of the week from home. That meant my "bike to work" started and finished at home. Heck, I'm still working. I'm riding my bike. That qualifies, right?
I rode Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In the spirit of my pre-baby life and old pro racing days, I rode my bike to the "Law Day 5k" in Ventura, Calif. Old habits die hard!
Event organizers for this year’s Dina LaVigna Breath of Life Triathlon charity fundraiser in Ventura, CA are in need of volunteers. For the past 16 years, my the LaVigna family has put on a Triathlon in honor of Dina LaVigna who passed away from Primary Immunodeficiency (PI). The Breath of Life Triathlon raises money to improve the care and comfort of patients (usually children), with PI. Previous projects have been at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York, a $750,000 improvement at Mattel’s Children’s Hospital at UCLA, and the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Visit the website at: www.DinaTriForLife.com

This year’s big event is fast approaching. Here are details. Consider inking it in your calendar, volunteering some of your time and supporting the athletes and the cause.

The Breath of Life triathlon will be on the fourth *Sunday of June on the 22rd* inside the *Ventura Harbor*. There are lots of activities to keep you busy and if you can help, the LaVigna Family we would really, really appreciate it! They simply could not put on this tremendous fundraising event without the incredible support of our family and friends.

Last year the event hosted nearly 1000 registered athletes and nearly 200 volunteers – and every individual was needed!

Possible tasks include:

- Registration Packet Distribution Saturday pm and/or Sunday am

- Swim Course Volunteer

- Run/Bike Course Volunteer

- Transition Area Volunteer

- BBQ Volunteer

- Parking Area Volunteer

Lots of options and much depends on how soon you’d be able to help in the morning – the earlier the better
If possible there is a need for Saturday volunteers to help setup and/or distribute race packets, from noon – 5pm.

Please contact Ayndrea LaVigna Tyo and let her know if you have a preference for what you’d like to do, or a required start/end time so they can best accommodate your schedule – tasks begin as early as 5am and as you might guess the earlier the harder it is to find volunteers.

Her family comes together year after year to produce this event in her memory.

I really like gummies and enjoyed the taste of the Nature's Bounty gummies, so it wasn't hard to remember to take two twice a day! I received a free month's supply to test as a member of Smiley360.
The Nature's Hair, Skin & Nails Bounty Gummies have no artificial flavor, no lactose, no soy, no gluten, no wheat, no yeast, no fish and are sodium free. If you have any dietary restrictions related to those ingredients you are 'all good'.

They have 15 calories per serving (2 Gummies) and have 15mg of vitamin C, 15 IU of vitamin E and 2.5 mg of Biotin. If you are counting carbs, one serving has 4g of carbohydrates. Something I was not happy about...the top two ingredients are corn syrup and sugar. I suppose that makes sense, these are gummies after all. If that is not a deal breaker for you, read on...

My skin is clear and my nails are strong. Admittedly tough to judge the improvement in my hair. It is always in a ponytail, under a swim cap, a bicycle helmet or a swim cap! I did notice less hair in my brush and in the bathtub drain (ack!). It is hard to give Nature's Bounty all of the credit for healthy hair, skin and nails as that has to do with general healthy living, but I'm sure the gummies helped. My nails aren't peeling or chipped. No breakage. And hey, they even looked nice enough to paint in pretty pink! You might want to give the challenge a try for yourself. You've got nothing to lose!
Throughout my
life I have made it priority one to make healthy choices. Initially it was all
about me. I wanted to build the strongest, healthiest body possible. A
competitive runner turned professional triathlete I made it a point to make
what I thought were the best choices and product purchases for optimal health. In 2011 when I became pregnant and earned the
title of mom, my zeal for making healthy choices became more focused on the
health of my child. This meant closely examining anything that I put in or on
my body. During my pre-natal and
post-partum phases, I truly became familiar with how powerful marketing and
product labels can be. Many products I chose were not exactly as ‘healthy’ as
they claimed to be.

What makes a
product ‘healthy’ goes a lot deeper than claims or pretty pictures of flowers
and herbs on the product label or in advertisements. To really know if a
product is good for you (and even good for the environment) you have to dig a
little. Reading labels and getting familiar with ingredients in a big step
towards debunking what products are healthy and those that are posers. I
started looking more closely at food labels, then cosmetics and personal care.

In my quest
for optimal health (a mission that kicks in overdrive when you approach a
certain birthday milestone, beginning with 4 and ending with 0), I have become
very interested in oral and dental health. Many illnesses and conditions have
been linked to poor oral health. Call it
serendipity, but right around the time I scheduled my first dentist
appointment, I got the opportunity to test the toothpaste, oral rinse, gum and
mints from the Spry Dental and Oral Care Product line made by Xlear.

The Spry products
are made with xylitol, a natural sweetener that not only tastes pleasant, but
has unique dental benefits that promote oral health. Xylitol is occurs in small
amounts in nature in fruits, veggies and mushrooms. Xylitol is also produced in
our bodies as a natural by-product of normal metabolism. Using products with
Xylitol like the Spry toothpaste, oral rinse, gum and mints help to promote
healthy gums, reduce the risk of tooth decay.
When I first
opened my box of Spry products, I’ll admit to being overwhelmed! I had never heard
of Xylitol before and that made me a bit uncomfortable. In order for my test to
be effective I needed to stop using my current toothpaste and mouthwash and
begin chewing gum post meals and taking mints, too. The day I was to start my
trial was also the day of an appointment with my new dentist, Dr. David
Satnick. During my patient interview and
exam, I asked Dr. Satnick about Xylitol. He was quick to give his stamp of
approval to products made with Xylitol. He then handed me a goodie bag with a
new toothbrush and samples of Spry gum! With the confidence that comes with my
dentist’s approval I began my trial.

to brushing and rinsing, I made it a point to chew once or two pieces of Spry
gum after each meal or snacks. I’m not usually a gum chewer, but to get the
positive benefit of the Xylitol you need only chew for five minutes or so -
totally doable. I found that the refreshing taste of the peppermint or
spearmint was a nice pick me up, too. (The gum also comes in cinnamon, fresh
fruit and green tea flavors).

and berry blast. The mints also come in cinnamon and lemon blast.

My test products were free. I’m still

do so. I am purchasing the Spry products because they are effective and
healthful. I like that Xylitol is natural and that there is a complete system
to help you manage and care for your oral health. Healthy teeth and healthy
gums are key to a healthy body. The fact that my dentist, a highly regarded man
in his field, recommended the products makes using Spry products a no brainer.

The group was diverse in its background, fitness and skill sets but all had the common goal of a successful escape. Below is a note from one of this year's Alcatraz triathlon training program participants.
wanted to thank you for the plan you provided us to prepare for the Alcatraz
race. Despite arthroscopic knee surgery in November, a hip flexor injury
in January and a bad case of respiratory flu in February, I made it through the
race under my goal time of 3 hours. I credit the plan you put together
for much of what I consider to be a very successful race. Thank you…and
best of luck with the remainder of the 2013 season!

I was in your shop last wednesday and got a bike fit. I just wanted to say thank you again for doing an excellent job. I put the bike fit to the ultimate test and rode in the Solvang century without any pain or discomfort. As I mentioned before that the farthest ride that i have been on was about 45 miles on this new bike and i was having pain in my back, arms, hands and knees. So to not have anything at all I am truly grateful. I look forward to referring people to you and also doing more business in the future.

Thanks again, Dennis Fox

********************************************************************

For more information about a professional, Retul equipped bike fit with FIST & Retul certified master fitter Philip Casanta, please visit Hypercat Racing online. Expect a return to all things related to triathlon, endurance sports and of course the occasional homage to small yappy dogs. However the big news is that I am now a mom! My little dude was born in June and I'm now learning how to continue to live the multisport lifestyle but perhaps in a more balanced way as family life is taking a turn at the wheel.
Set your audio dial to "11" and CRANK IT!

Getting ready for a big race weekend. Thinking good thoughts. Heading out to spin on my old trusty Blue R6. (No TT bike for the Escape from Alcatraz course.) Just making sure the gears are shifting some as silk, the brakes are adjusted & a few practice runs getting in and out of my Northwave Tributes shoes. Easy to do when warmed up, but a bit of a challenge after swimming in 55 degree water. I'll miss the festivities at the Wildflower triathlons today, but couldn't pass up sleeping in my own bed, supporting a dozen Hypercats tackling the Escape and racking up the 10th Escape from Alcatraz of my career. I'm going to have a great time! As a high school track runner, I spent a lot of time doing lung burning intervals on the indoor track at Manley Field House on the Syracuse University campus. Coach Love had season tickets for SU men's basketball games would often treat me to a Syracuse basketball game after an evening's track workout. Back in those days it was Sherman "the General" Douglas, Dwayne "the Pearl" Washington and Rony Seikely. The sparks of a love affair with Syracuse basketball were in full flame.

A few years later I would end up enrolling at Syracuse University and matriculating as a student. Growing up in Central New York I already had an affinity for all things orange (including the mascot Otto), but my orange affliction grew with each passing academic year.
There are so many emotions linked to that glorious big bubble perched atop the Syracuse hill. I love watching basketball games contested in the Carrier Dome. The rituals, the sounds and the roar of the crowd. Aside from SU ball, I have many layers of personal history tied to the Dome. I ran the 1000 meters in the National Indoor Scholastic Track and Field Championships in the Dome. Underneath the turf is a 200m track! I was a member of the Central Square High School Marching Redmen and played my sax in the band at the NY State Field Band Championships. (yup, I tooted my horn in marching band!). I've watched (and worked) countless entertainment and sporting events in the Dome, too. As part of the work study program, I worked in catering. One year there was a stars on ice production and I had the opportunity to serve potatoes to figure skating greats like Oksana Bauil. In 1996 I earned my bachelors degree and graduated in the Dome while it snowed outside. (By the way it was mothers day - May!). The list goes on.

Like legions of Syracuse Orange fans, I am over the moon with the men's basketball team's current #1 national ranking. (and the women's team is rockin' it, too) As I get ready to travel to Syracuse this week, you better believe I will be rooting for the Orange during Saturday's game vs Louisville. Alas, it will be from a local watering hole as the Orange aren't playing at home this week. At least I will be able to see the Dome from the hotel.
Go Orange!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03133335229823297869noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28563462.post-4095820818824757002010-02-26T14:13:00.000-08:002010-02-26T14:13:20.631-08:00The Oakland Running Festival | Oakland, California 94612 | Saturday, March 27, 2010Bay area runners and endurance athletes are so lucky. I am just delighted how many 'gems' are woven into its pages. Frankly, I poo-poo'd (no pun intended) the book when my husband suggest I should read it. I'm not sure what I thought it was about, but I had the visual of Winnie the Pooh in my head and I didn't patience for what I thought was a book for juveniles. Boy, I was I mistaken!

Currently, The Tao of Pooh, shares space on my desk with my USA Triathlon Southwest projects, Hypercat Racing business, coaching files, bills, pace charts, training plans and goofy Chococat pencils and pens. I've kept it there so that I can quickly leaf through the pages to occasionally revisit a favorite passage or two.

One of the pages I have bookmarked contains the passage below...

"In the story of the Ugly Duckling, when did the Ugly Duckling stop feeling Ugly? When he realized that he was a Swan. Each of us has something Special, s Swan of some sort, hidden inside somewhere. But until we recognize that it's there, what can we do but splash around, treading water? The Wise are Who They Are. The work with what they've got and do what they can do."

To fully comprehend what the author is trying to say, it helps to read further in the chapter, but I think the last two sentences of the quoted passage are gems and worthy of pondering!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03133335229823297869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28563462.post-50511232678263739322009-09-05T18:56:00.000-07:002009-09-07T11:02:59.258-07:00Positive Thoughts = Positive Outcome<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBSb0EF4IpFa3XF5seoKb5YPwt2glRQEVMuO42tqybVWVdio2tQ4jinGHgTqBFw5o6W-p4nr1XycGuzWZ8HTn4sI_5ukXrMFiJiHCDjtjkHgKBGSBGyA5EKI4_uV7vVKP6kK_A/s320/positive-attitude-2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378168285012608754" />
Success in life starts with belief that you can achieve it. Mental preparation for athletic performance is as important to training as your daily workout regimen. It need not be complicated, but simply the regular practice of positive mental thought and affirming that you can do it. Below are ten positive affirmations that I have found to be helpful from sport psychologist, JoAnn Dahlkeotter. Incidently, Dr. Dahlkoetter finished 2nd at Ironman Hawaii in 1982.

Positive Affirmations for Athletic Confidence

1. I strive to be positive and enthusiastic no matter what.
2. I feel a sense of power, confidence and inner strength
3. I thoroughly enjoy myself as I train and race.
4. I am a smooth efficient, swimmer, cyclist, runner..I am improving rapidly.
5. The results will take care of themselves. I simply perform.
6. My body and mind are growing stronger and healthier every day.
7. Mistakes simply represent feedback and are a necessary part of
learning anything well.
8. I focus on doing the very best I can at every moment.
9. I am willing to do whatever it takes to meet my goal.
10. Focusing on the process and enjoying what that journey brings is one way to redirect energy.

Whether it's a professional work pursuit, family, friendship or personal aspiration, that has you tangled up, remind yourself of this passage.

The Tao of Pooh has an simple, but eloquent way of illustrating this idea.

To know the Way,
We go the Way;
We do the Way
The way we do
The Things we do.
It's all there in front of you,
But if you try too hard to see it.
You'll only become Confused.

I am me,
And you can see;
But when you do
The things that you can do,
You will find the Way,
And the Way will follow you.

From the book The Tao of Pooh - Benjamin Hoff - 1982,Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03133335229823297869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28563462.post-7581510988406560532009-08-14T18:16:00.001-07:002009-08-14T18:42:39.570-07:00Catching Up It has always been a part of my personal fabric to take on a few too many tasks and obligations. In high school, probably like most over achieving teens, I participated in almost everything humanly and inhumanly possible. I was in clubs galore, ran XC, indoor and outdoor track, played the saxophone and was psycho about getting the best grades possible. That is just the beginning, but we will leave it at that. In college at Syracuse University little changed as I expanded my interests and found even more things to fill more than 24 hours a day. I got away with it for that time, but certainly my health and sanity was not at its prime.

Fast forwarding to the present, the first half of 2009 has been no different than any of the other over-extended periods of my life. You could say I had a bit too much going on. I was coaching Albany High school track, working hard towards my masters at the University of San Francisco, running my coaching company Hypercat Racing, nurturing my new marriage to Philip Casanta, being mommy to 6 furry creatures and oh, yeah, trying to make a sort of comeback in my professional racing career. On top of that I began working part time for USA Triathlon Southwest region as the region's administrator along with occupying myself with random short term internship projects for school.

As a coach of high schoolers and adults alike, I encourage athletes to try new things and expose themselves to learning opportunities. I do believe though that a jack of all trades, is indeed a master of none. Last month, I came to realize that it was time for me to walk that walk and reprioritize. I made the very difficult decision to forgo high school coaching this fall so that I could focus on family, finishing up my grad school education, giving my all to Hypercat Racing and doing the best I can to work with my physical limitations and maintain my professional multisport racing career. Part of this refocusing means an attention to activities related to being a professional athlete which brings me to this blog.

When I first started a website to chronicle my triathlon racing back in 1999 it was intended simply to keep my family in New York abreast of my travels. A lot has changed since '99 and now with multiple websites and blogs, the use of technology as it relates to my triathlon career and coaching has many more purposes. One of those purposes is to share what I learn competing in the professional ranks and to help promote the sport of triathlon through offering coaching and training guidance for those who take on the challenge of swim, bike, run. I have a lot of back work to do as I'd like to share stories from this season's races. You can also look forward to regular training and racing tips as I get back up to speed. You might also want to check out http://hypercatracing.wordpress.com/ the blog I maintain for Hypercat Racing. As with anything, you improve with practice. I hope you'll find my writing to be interesting and engaging, albeit ripe with some weird 'rat-isms' from time to time. ('rat-isms are what husband Phil calls things I say that make no sense at all).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03133335229823297869noreply@blogger.com0
